Charging Speeds Explained: AC, DC, and What Affects Them

A straightforward guide to Polestar 2 charging — what speeds to expect and what factors affect them.

Understanding how your Polestar 2 charges and what speeds to expect takes the guesswork out of road trips and daily use.

AC Charging (Home / Destination)

The Polestar 2 has an onboard charger that converts AC power to DC for the battery:

  • Single-phase (most homes): Up to 7.4 kW on a 32A circuit. Full charge in roughly 10–11 hours.
  • Three-phase (where available): Up to 11 kW. Full charge in roughly 7–8 hours.

The onboard charger maxes out at 11 kW regardless of what the EVSE (wall box) can supply.

DC Fast Charging

DC charging bypasses the onboard charger entirely — the station feeds DC directly into the battery.

  • Peak rate, 2021: up to 150 kW
  • Peak rate, 2022–2023 (78 kWh): up to 155 kW
  • Peak rate, 2024+ with the 82 kWh battery: up to 205 kW. This covers all 2024+ single-motor Long Range cars and US dual-motor cars from 2025.
  • Peak rate, 2024 US dual-motor cars: up to 155 kW (these kept the 78 kWh pack)
  • Standard Range (non-US markets): lower, around 135 kW
  • 10–80% time: Approximately 30–35 minutes under optimal conditions.
  • Optimal entry SoC: Arrive at the charger between 10–20% for the best curve. Starting at 50% means you've already passed peak charging speed.

What Affects DC Charging Speed

  1. 1.Battery temperature. A cold battery charges slowly. Preconditioning (automatic when you navigate to a fast charger via Google Maps) warms the battery for peak performance.
  2. 2.State of charge. Charging speed drops significantly above 80%. Charging from 80–100% takes almost as long as 10–80%.
  3. 3.Charger capability. Not all "fast chargers" are equal. A 50 kW station will never exceed 50 kW regardless of what your car supports.
  4. 4.Ambient temperature. Extreme heat can also trigger thermal throttling to protect battery longevity.

Practical Tips

  • Daily charging: Just use AC at home overnight. Charge to 80% for daily use to preserve battery health.
  • Road trips: Use the built-in Google Maps route planner — it factors in charging stops, battery state, and charger availability.
  • Winter: Allow extra time. Preconditioning helps, but expect 20–30% slower DC charging in cold weather.
