2021 — 2025

Model Years

The Polestar 2 evolved significantly across its production run. The biggest dividing line is 2024: new motors, rear-wheel drive for the single motor, and drivetrain parts that don't interchange with 2021–2023 cars. Ranges are US EPA figures.

2021

The launch year

Key Changes

  • First model year; US launched with the Long Range Dual Motor only
  • Android Automotive OS infotainment with Google built in
  • Two identical permanent-magnet motors (front and rear), 300 kW combined
  • 78 kWh battery (75 kWh usable)
  • PTC resistive cabin heater only — no heat pump
  • Known for 12V battery drain, TCAM connectivity bugs, and early software immaturity

Available Models

Long Range Dual Motor

AWD

Performance Pack adds chassis hardware only — no extra power. The optional Performance software upgrade (350 kW) arrived later via OTA.

Power

300 kW (408 hp)

Torque

660 Nm / 487 lb-ft

Battery

78 kWh (75 kWh usable)

Range

233 mi (EPA)

DC fast charging: Up to 150 kW DC

Available Options

  • Plus Pack — Harman Kardon audio, panoramic roof, heated rear seats, wireless charging
  • Pilot Pack — Pilot Assist, adaptive cruise control, 360-degree camera, auto-dimming mirrors
  • Performance Pack — Öhlins dampers, Brembo front brakes, 20" forged wheels, gold accents (no power increase)
  • Nappa leather interior

The first generation. The hardware was solid, but software maturity was lacking; most early issues were addressed by OTA updates over time. Single-motor variants were sold in other markets from 2021 but didn't reach the US until MY2022.

2022

Single motor arrives, software matures

Key Changes

  • Long Range Single Motor (front-wheel drive) added in the US
  • Heat pump available as part of the Plus Pack
  • Performance software upgrade: 300 → 350 kW via OTA (Europe from Nov 2021, US from Dec 2022)
  • DC charging peak raised to 155 kW
  • Some TCAMs built Dec 2021–Mar 2022 affected by the reboot-loop defect (TJ 36260)
  • BST Edition 270 limited edition (270 units, 47 for the US)

  • Performance software upgrade — 350 kW / 680 Nm, sold separately (US: $1,195)
  • Nappa leather interior

Mechanically the same as 2021, with the single motor added and much better software. A late-2022 build with the heat pump is a strong used buy. A dual motor with the 350 kW software upgrade performs like a 2023 Performance Pack car.

2023

Last of the original powertrain

Key Changes

  • Same motors and 78 kWh battery as 2021–2022
  • Performance Pack now includes the 350 kW software upgrade
  • Dual Motor EPA range improved to 260 mi through software
  • Heat pump efficiency improvements via software (Plus Pack)
  • BST Edition 230 limited edition — original powertrain with the 2024-style front end (230 units)

The final year of the original front-wheel-drive single motor and the 300 kW dual-motor powertrain. Parts for 2021–2023 cars are largely interchangeable with each other — but many drivetrain and axle parts do NOT carry over to 2024+.

2024

New motors, new drivetrain

Key Changes

  • All-new motors: single motor switches from front-wheel to rear-wheel drive
  • Dual motor is now rear-biased: new permanent-magnet rear motor plus an asynchronous front motor that can fully disconnect
  • Single Motor: 220 kW / 490 Nm with an 82 kWh battery and 205 kW DC charging
  • Dual Motor: 310 kW / 740 Nm. Performance Pack: 335 kW / 740 Nm on US cars (78 kWh), 350 kW with the 82 kWh battery
  • US Performance Pack: less power than 2023 (335 vs 350 kW) but more torque (740 vs 680 Nm)
  • New axle and drivetrain hardware — not interchangeable with 2021–2023 cars
  • Revised front end with a sensor/camera panel in place of the grille
  • Slightly better infotainment unit (more RAM) — feels faster and can show the top-down and rear camera views together when reversing

  • Nappa leather interior

The biggest change in the Polestar 2's life. Under the skin it's a different car: new motors, rear-wheel drive for the single motor, a disconnecting front motor on the dual, and new axle and drivetrain parts. When buying parts, always confirm whether a part is for 2021–2023 or 2024+.

2025

One fully loaded trim (US)

Key Changes

  • US lineup reduced to a single trim: Long Range Dual Motor with Performance Pack
  • Single-motor versions no longer sold in the US
  • 82 kWh battery and 205 kW DC charging on US dual-motor cars
  • Performance Pack back to 350 kW / 476 hp in the US (with the 82 kWh battery)
  • Plus, Pilot, and Performance equipment standard in the US (including heat pump)
